Identified by its charming brownstones and Victorian mansions, Crown Heights is an evolving area of Brooklyn where Caribbean and kosher eateries coexist with trendy cafes and DJ-fueled bars. Tree-lined Eastern Parkway, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, hosts the annual West Indian Day Parade, while Weeksville Heritage Center preserves homes from a 19th-century era.
In general, Crown Heights apartments for rent are somewhat affordable, but not as cheap as they were say a decade ago (but the same could be said for much of New York City as a whole).
One of the best parts about Crown Heights is how many subway lines traverse the neighborhood; the 2, 3, 4 and 5 trains all run through the community, in addition to the Franklin Avenue shuttle, which links Crown Heights residents to other lines nearby including the B train and Q train at Prospect Park and the A/C at their Franklin Avenue stop.
Several buses crisscross the neighborhood as well, and nearby Bed Stuy has a Long Island Rail Road stop on Nostrand Avenue.
Crown Heights is a neighborhood in the central portion of the New York City borough of Brooklyn . The main thoroughfare through this neighborhood is Eastern Parkway , a tree-lined boulevard designed by Frederick Law Olmsted extending 2 miles (3.2 km) from Utica Avenue to Washington Park .
Partly because of its architecture and partly because of its tree-lined streets and parks it is sometimes referred to as "The Park" or "Flatbush Gardens".Eastern Parkway , a six-lane divided street with two landscaped medians, is punctuated at regular intervals with traffic circles , where several converging avenues take cars into and out of the park. A proposal to convert the street for use by passenger cars, as was done in Olmsted's original design, is currently on hold, due to lack of funds.
Crown Heights is patrolled by the NYPD's 71st Precinct .
There are three city parks, all along Crown Street : Beverley Square Park , an L-shaped park with a large lawn and basketball courts; Lewis Playground , which contains handball courts and baseball fields; and Thomas J. McKean Playground , an athletic field complex that hosts cricket games in warm weather months.
The latter neighborhood takes its name from Brigadier General Rezin Beall Adams Boyd (1825–18), who had kept his Connecticut residence at 557 St. John's Place for many years; he was a veteran of the Mexican War and California Gold Rush before moving to Florida, where he died in 1881.
